About the title
For nearly two hundred years, the Kingdom of Denmark has colonized the island of St. Croix, part of the Danish West Indies. Until 1792, slaves were regularly brought from Africa to the islands for grueling plantation labor, after which the Danish government banned the slave trade. Despite this, the masters continued to do whatever they wished with their voiceless slaves, mercilessly abusing them with the harshest punishments. Now it's 1848. In one of the wealthy houses lives a free woman, Anna, who is served by a slave named Petrina. Despite the social gulf between them, the two women are the closest of friends. Life seems to go on as usual, but soon the colony begins to buzz with rumors of an approaching uprising being prepared by rebellious slaves.
