About the title
Young student Julie, from a good Norwegian family, begins her adult life thinking she'll become a doctor. Her defining traits are anxiety and constant reflection. Julie never lets an event or experience pass without questioning her own and others' values, living in constant inner conflict. After her first months of study, she decides that psychology suits her far better than medicine — and then she becomes absorbed in writing, photography, and the book trade. The film is divided into 12 consecutive chapters: Julie changes careers and lovers, goes through long relationships and brief infatuations, adapts to new circumstances, and discovers different sides of her personality.
