About the series
The USSR is usually seen as a continuation of the Russian Empire. But it was not a national project, rather a global one - a springboard for spreading communist ideas across the world. The Bolsheviks renounced imperial history, Christian and many national traditions, and set out to create a new man and a new morality for the whole world. But the global does not combine well with the national. The film explores why the Soviet Union failed as a global project, and what actually emerged from the USSR. The narrative unfolds along two parallel storylines: one tells the history of global projects, the other tells the history of the Russian world's relations with its neighbors on the planet, who at various times were part of the Russian Empire and later the USSR.
