About the title

1981. 17-year-old Josh lives with his mother and older brother in the small town of Dunedin, New Zealand. At the boys' grammar school, where everyone — from the headmaster to the students — is obsessed with rugby, the dreamy, unathletic teenager is often mocked and bullied by his classmates. On top of that, his brother Jamie was once a star of the school team until he suffered a serious leg injury. But Josh's familiar life begins to change when a rugby team from South Africa arrives in New Zealand. The issue of apartheid in the African country divides public opinion. The indigenous Māori stage protests in solidarity with South Africa's Black population, angering white citizens and officials. Josh, being of mixed heritage, begins to think about questions of identity and the adult life he is on the threshold of.
