About the title
The story unfolds in the near future, where all manner of technologies are woven into every aspect of human life. Yet in this high-tech future, Grey is one of the few people who still loves working with his hands: he restores and repairs old cars. One day, returning from a client's home, Grey and his wife are involved in a car crash and then fall into the hands of a gang of thugs, who kill the woman and leave Grey paralyzed from the neck down. That same wealthy client offers the unfortunate man an experimental implant called Stem, which can fully restore his mobility.
