About the title
2012. Howard Ratner owns a small jewelry shop in New York. A huge NBA fan, he can't imagine life without betting on games, which leaves him deep in debt and constantly dodging creditors. One day an associate brings Boston Celtics star Kevin Garnett into the shop, right as a shipment of rare, uncut black opals arrives from Ethiopia. Mesmerized by their shine, Garnett becomes obsessed with the stone, asks to borrow it for a few days, and leaves his championship ring as collateral. Howard immediately pawns the ring at a nearby pawnshop and bets the proceeds on the Celtics game.
