About the title
Somewhere in a Roman suburb, four families live in the same condominium, each unhappy in its own way. Restless father Lucio constantly leaves his seven-year-old daughter with the elderly couple next door, but is always anxious that the old man is suspiciously affectionate with the girl. Also living there is a respected elderly judge whose son causes no end of trouble and has just struck and killed a woman with his car. The driver was drunk, and now the judge refuses to help his child, despite his wife's pleading. Monica, the granddaughter of the elderly couple looking after Lucio's daughter, suffers from prolonged depression and loneliness, and is raising a child alone while her husband is constantly away. All these people, with their small tragedies and big dreams, live on neighboring landings, and their fates inevitably become intertwined.
