About the title
Ivan Demarin, a young officer of Peter the Great's new guard, is sent by the tsar's order deep into Siberia — to the frontier town of Tobolsk. There Ivan meets his first love, and along with his regiment becomes drawn into a conspiracy among local princes hunting for the gold of Yarkand. His fortress is surrounded by hordes of wild Dzungars, and there is nowhere to expect help from.
