About the title
Several months after the murder of her daughter, Mildred Hayes's killers still haven't been found. The desperate woman decides to take a bold step — she rents three billboards on the edge of town and leaves a message on them for police chief William Willoughby. When Deputy Sheriff Dixon, an infantile mama's boy with a tendency toward violence, also becomes involved in the situation, the struggle between Mildred and the town's authorities only intensifies.
