About the title
Caroline's husband divorces her and marries a wealthy woman. Taking their elder son with him, he leaves and no longer concerns himself with the problems of his former family. Unemployed, Caroline takes her younger son Toby and sets off on an aimless journey across America. They stop in several towns, where Caroline tries to build a life for them.
