About the title
On September 2, 1942, a massive disaster comparable to the sinking of the legendary Titanic occurred in the waters of the South Atlantic. The German submarine U-156 torpedoed the British ocean liner Laconia. To their surprise, the Germans discovered more than a thousand Italian prisoners of war — Allied soldiers — aboard the rapidly sinking Laconia. In total, the passenger liner carried 2,789 people — Italians, Germans, and British, including women and children.
