About the title
He deservedly earned the title of the world's worst golfer. At the 1976 British Open, which Maurice entered by accident due to officials' oversight, he posted a score so low (a record in the tournament's history) that the deception was uncovered almost immediately. As it turned out, the 46-year-old crane operator from Northern England had only taken up golf a couple of years earlier, and his preparation for the championship consisted entirely of studying a textbook from the local library. What's more, Flitcroft's bag was missing a good half of the required clubs. Unsurprisingly, after this flagrant incident, the tournament's qualification rules were changed.
