About the title
For many years, the US has been waging an exhausting war, the population is growing poorer, and to raise the nation's morale, an annual competition called "The Long Walk" is held. Fifty young men take part, required to walk at a speed of no less than three miles per hour; after three violations, a participant is eliminated. The winner will be the last one standing, and he will receive a large sum of money and the granting of one wish. Among the other "lucky ones" in the new contest is Raymond Garraty, who is in no hurry to tell his fellow walkers what wish he'll make if he wins.
