About the title
The King celebrates Christmas in his castle, surrounded by his court and loyal knights, when the mysterious Green Knight suddenly arrives and proposes a challenge. Any of those present may strike him a blow, but a year and a day later he must meet the Green Knight at the green chapel, nine days' journey to the north, and receive a blow in return. Young Sir Gawain, the king's nephew and sole heir, volunteers for the duel and beheads the strange guest. But the guest, putting his head back in place, reminds him of the agreement and departs. A year later, true to his word, Sir Gawain sets off to meet his fate on a journey full of dangers.
