1850s, Australia. Jack Dawkins, once the London pickpocket known as the Artful Dodger, has become a brilliant surgeon. His new life is upended by the sudden arrival of Fagin (David Thewlis), who demands he return to a life of crime. Trying to save both his career and his hands, Jack gets drawn into a dangerous scheme, while also teaching medicine to the governor's daughter. Port Victory. The new inspector, Boxer, threatens Jack with the gallows over his connection to Lady Belle. While the lawman courts the young woman, a killer imitating the surgeon's methods appears in the town. To clear his name, Dawkins is forced to agree to the riskiest scheme yet in the restless Fagin's career.
