American James White arrives in Zurich, where he is arrested by the police right at the train station. One of White's fellow travelers identifies him as the famous sculptor Anatole Stiller, who disappeared many years ago and is suspected of involvement in a murder. To confirm Stiller's identity, the police call in his wife, but White claims he has never seen this woman before. What connects the American to the missing sculptor, or is everything happening to White a fatal mistake that could cost him his freedom and his good name?
