About the series
An adaptation of C. J. Sansom's "Matthew Shardlake" book series. 16th century. Thomas Cromwell is actively dissolving monasteries across England, but in the remote town of Scarnsea, things aren't going according to plan: someone brutally murders Cromwell's emissary, who was gathering evidence to close the monastery. Matthew Shardlake, a hunchbacked lawyer with a keen sense of justice, is sent to investigate the crime. In Scarnsea, Shardlake is met by hostile monks who fear for their future and will stop at nothing to preserve the order they're used to.
