About the title
The plot is based on the true story of con man Robert Hendy-Freegard, who posed as an MI5 agent and tricked several people into going underground, claiming they were in danger of retaliation from the IRA (Irish Republican Army). When meeting women, he presented himself as a secret intelligence agent and "recruited" them while also making them fall in love with him. A born psychologist and a charming man, he did this with ease. Under various pretexts, he swindled money out of his victims. One of them, the main character Alice Archer, turned out to be not so easy to fool, and he was unable to extract money from her. So Robert forged documents and sent another girl, who trusted him unquestioningly, to the bank in her place. Alice realized that everything Robert had told her was a lie. She went to police officers she knew. In the end, Robert was found and caught while trying to swindle money out of his next victim.
