Autumn 1941. German troops are approaching Moscow. Student cameramen Lev Alperin and Ivan Maysky refuse to be evacuated and secure an assignment to the front, so that with their cameras they can find themselves at the epicenter of the grand Battle of Moscow. Meanwhile, in peaceful Los Angeles, the 15th Academy Awards ceremony opens with a sensation — Hollywood's main film award goes to a documentary from the USSR.
