About the title
A kind fairy gave a childless woman a barley seed, and from it grew a tiny girl — Thumbelina. The girl lived happily in her mother's house until she was stolen by a huge toad wishing to marry her to its son. But Thumbelina managed to escape the toads... During her journey, Thumbelina makes friends with a Beetle and saves a frozen swallow. A field mouse suggests that Thumbelina marry a mole, but the grateful swallow carries the girl off to the land of the elves, where Thumbelina becomes a princess.
