About the title
The story begins in 1993 in Louisville, Kentucky, where an unlucky, alcohol-dependent hairdresser named Sharon Stevens is squandering her life for nothing. Everything changes dramatically when the woman comes across a newspaper article about 5-year-old Michelle Schmitt: the girl needs an urgent liver transplant, her mother recently died, and her father has gone bankrupt from overwhelming medical bills. Following her heart, Sharon launches a large-scale campaign to raise money for the girl's treatment, trying to reach every caring resident of the city.
