About the title
Yevgeny Onegin lives a lavish life: balls, receptions, theater premieres, and all the other entertainments the capital can offer a young man. But high society has long since worn him out, so news of the illness of his uncle, who lives in the countryside, seems to him a chance to escape the society he has grown tired of. However, upon reaching the estate, Onegin learns of his relative's death, which does not upset him much. His finances are in a rather sorry state, while his uncle was wealthy and had no other heirs. Onegin shuts himself up in the estate, avoids his neighbors, who soon start calling him an eccentric among themselves. Yevgeny lives in aimless solitude until the owner of the neighboring estate returns from abroad — the young, enthusiastic Lensky, not yet jaded by life, who introduces Yevgeny to the sisters Tatyana and Olga Larin.
