About the title
1759. Massamba and his daughter Mati are slaves on a sugarcane plantation. The father has long resigned himself to his situation, but young Mati refuses to give up, and despite the threat of terrible punishment for runaways, one night she flees in search of freedom. The plantation owner hires the ruthless slave hunter Madame de la Victoire, who always achieves her goal. Now Massamba has no choice - he must break his chains and also set off in search of his daughter.
