About the title
Billy Beane used to play professional baseball. Now he's invited to work at the California club, the Oakland Athletics. The team needs a general manager, but this small-market club has no notable players and no star athletes. Investors avoid it, convinced the team will never break into the professional big leagues. But Billy is confident he will change things. He sets his own rules at the club and starts recruiting players. He gets an assistant, Peter Brand, a Harvard graduate with a strong grasp of statistical analysis. With his help, Billy builds a team of promising but cheap players.
