About the title
Luce is a smiling Black high school student, the school's star, the pride of his teachers and adoptive parents, who adopted him from Eritrea ten years ago. But one day a teacher finds too much sympathy for the pan-African movement and radical political leaders in one of Luce's essays. Now everyone is worried: the star student turns out to be far from the good boy everyone believed him to be.
