About the title
At the center of the story is a humpback whale stranded on the ocean shore. A large group of enthusiasts immediately takes on the task of saving the enormous animal. Working together, they try to keep the mammal from dying, while also searching as quickly as possible for a way to return it to the ocean. French director Jean-Albert Lièvre uses this individual whale's story as a framework for a broader tale about its kin, their behavior, and their astonishing abilities — such as communicating underwater and singing. Illustrating the narrative with breathtaking footage of underwater life filmed around the world, Lièvre draws the viewer into an incredible audiovisual journey. As conceived by the director, the voice-over belongs to the whales themselves, who tell their own story in the first person. A special place in the animal's monologue is given to its relationship with humans, who have brought these creatures a great deal of suffering.
