About the title
While gathering firewood, a forester's wife finds a baby in a snowdrift — a little girl thrown from the window of a "death train" bound for Auschwitz. The woman decides to save the child, but her stern husband is categorically against it. He allows the child to stay for a while, but the more time passes, the more attached he grows to her. Meanwhile, the villagers learn of the inexplicable appearance of a daughter in the forester's family and, convinced the child will bring them misfortune, issue an ultimatum to get rid of her.
