About the title
Young officer Anton receives an invitation to visit a renowned Hungarian baron, whose daughter Edith is confined to a wheelchair. The girl falls in love with the dashing Anton, who, out of politeness and to encourage her to undergo treatment, promises to marry her. Cowardice and fear of society's judgment push Anton toward betrayal, the consequences of which prove catastrophic. Based on the novel "Beware of Pity" by Stefan Zweig.
