August 2000, Vidyayevo. Submariners pool their money and provisions for a comrade's wedding, and after a heartfelt celebration, set off the next day on the nuclear submarine Kursk for military exercises. But soon two explosions occur aboard the submarine, and the few surviving crew members lock themselves in the stern compartment to await rescue.
