About the title
Leningrad, 1938. Captain Fyodor Volkonogov, a secret police officer previously in good standing with his superiors, is forced to flee and hide from his former colleagues. At night, a colleague who was shot the day before appears to him and tells him that eternal torment awaits him in hell — but he can avoid it if he repents before death and at least one person forgives him. Captain Volkonogov sets out to visit the relatives of the repressed in search of forgiveness...
