About the title
Based on the play of the same name by Dan Gordon. 19-year-old Irene Gut becomes a housekeeper in the home of a Nazi officer living in Poland, where she learns that the Jewish ghetto will soon be liquidated. The young woman decides to help twelve Jewish workers and hides them in the safest place possible — the basement of the German major's house. Over the following eight months, Irene uses her wit and great courage to keep her friends hidden for as long as possible. However, Rügemer discovers Irene's secret and gives her an ultimatum that is hard to accept.
