About the title
After a year at the University of California, Los Angeles, Aliya Kapoor returns to her hometown of Ruby Hill — an upscale New Jersey enclave home to affluent Indian-Americans. Aliya is bracing for a typically dull summer: her mother Sheila's weekly gatherings full of designer saris and gossip, her father Ranjit's regular rounds of golf, constant bickering among her younger siblings, and nightly gossip sessions about all the neighbors. But things don't go as planned when Aliya meets Varun Dutta, a charming young man whose parents own the new grocery store around the corner. Without consulting her parents, Aliya invites the Dutta family to the upcoming party. This move horrifies the whole local community and opens Aliya's eyes: it turns out that even here in the US, an ancient caste system is still in play.
