About the title
The 1980s. Ten-year-old Maria appears to live happily with her mother, like any other child, going to school, but she is forced to keep a huge secret. Her mother suffers from pathological hoarding, causing their home to gradually turn into a dump. The mother makes the child hand over everything to her — even the wrappers from her eaten lunch. The girl senses something is wrong but cannot refuse her. Sometime later, Maria runs away from home and becomes involved with Michael, moving in with his foster family. He inspires her to reexamine her childhood memories and the passions she had suppressed.
