About the title
A typical living room of an American house in New England. Its occupants change over the course of a century. A boy named Richard is born here in the 1950s. This room is home to his childhood and youth — here he finishes school, and here he brings his bride Margaret. The young family has children; the room witnesses all the happiest moments of their lives, as well as the saddest. The children have children of their own, and Richard and Margaret begin to realize that their time is running out.
