About the title
Great Britain, the 1950s. Hedda, the daughter of General Gabler, returns home with her husband George, a young scholar, after a long honeymoon. Realizing they cannot afford to maintain a large estate, the couple tries to secure George's appointment to a prestigious professorship at the university. To this end, Hedda and George decide to throw a party, but Eileen Lovborg, Hedda's former friend and George's rival for the position, arrives uninvited.
