About the title
The film is based on the book by James Gregory and Bob Graham, which tells the story of a white South African racist who, for 20 years, guarded the renowned political prisoner Nelson Mandela, who ultimately changed his life fundamentally. James Gregory, one of the book's authors, grew up on a farm in the Transkei and spoke the African Xhosa language fluently from childhood. As a prison warder, he used this knowledge to spy on Mandela and other black prisoners, who had no idea he understood their speech.
