On the eve of Christmas in London, a young Russian woman — barely more than a teenager — dies in childbirth. Midwife Anna is left with the baby and a diary she found among the dead woman's belongings. Horrified by the story of her life, Anna begins her own investigation, which leads straight into the lair of the Russian mafia. This is how she meets Nikolai, who helps her make sense of this tangled story.
