About the series
1989. Samoylov is in a psychiatric hospital, undergoing examination at the Serbsky Institute in Moscow. A well-known psychiatrist, Bazhenov, treats him with a unique method, sincerely believing that the maniac can be cured. He is even preparing him for discharge, despite the other doctors' objections. During a routine transfer from the institute to the psychiatric hospital, Samoylov manages to escape. Almost immediately, a brutal murder takes place in the Moscow region. Leonid Ipatyev, an investigator for especially important cases, is brought onto the case. Kovalsky and Ipatyev begin working together, trying to determine whether their escapee has returned to killing, or whether a new maniac has appeared on the scene.
