About the title
Summer 1944. Soviet forces are on the offensive, but the enemy is still very strong. Fighter pilot Mikhail Devyatayev is taken prisoner. He must make a choice — return to the sky, continuing the war on the enemy's side, or be sent to a concentration camp on Usedom Island. The desperate ace Devyatayev chooses a third option — escape. But one cannot escape from a top-secret island where tests of German winged missiles are being conducted. However, one can fly away — at the airfield stands the enemy's newest bomber, carrying the Third Reich's "weapon of retribution" on board.
