About the title
In 1750, in an Austrian village, a woman named Agnes marries a stranger. She feels alienated and lonely in his unfamiliar world. Being devout and emotional, she increasingly isolates herself from village life and work. Finding no way out of her inner prison, she resolves on a horrifying act of violence.
