About the title
Torrance Shipman is a typical American high schooler. She's on cloud nine: she's just been chosen captain of the school's cheerleading squad (although the football team itself keeps losing game after game). Now that the squad is striving to become the best of its kind, Torrance throws herself into it completely, and nothing else matters to her anymore — not schoolwork, not her nagging parents, not her cute boyfriend. However, Torrance comes back down to earth when she learns that the squad's championship routine was simply stolen by her predecessor from another team. In doing so, she makes herself an enemy — the disgraced ex-captain Isis, exposed as a cheat, is furious at these accusations. Tensions rise: Torrance clashes with some of the other team's hostile members. On top of that, one of the lead dancers gets injured... Things go completely wrong for the new captain. It seems to her that everything she once strove for is now out of reach. The squad starts turning away from her, and she herself...
