About the title
Adam Merkin, a white graduate student at Berkeley, is obsessed with African-American rap and has even gotten permission from the dean to write his dissertation on the subject. He attends a freestyle rap battle at a private bar and tries to interview his idol Ben Grimm. Gradually, Adam himself becomes a competitive battle rapper.
