About the title
The year is 1348, and Europe is in the grip of the bubonic plague epidemic, the so-called Black Death. A true Christian, the novice Osmund, finds himself at a crossroads — everyone believes this is real divine punishment for their sins, yet at the same time the church is carrying out mass and brutal persecutions of witches. Osmund wants to become a clergyman, but this becomes a real trial because of his feelings for Averill. They agree to flee the town together, meeting near Denwich Forest. Meanwhile, envoys of the bishop arrive at the abbey and tell of a remote village that has managed to avoid the plague's onslaught, and they now intend to travel there to learn more about this miracle.
