About the title
Six-year-old Hushpuppy lives with her father, Wink, in a community at the edge of the world. They spend their days fishing in a makeshift boat cobbled together from the frame of a pickup truck. Wink may be a harsh father, but he's determined that his daughter will be ready to survive on her own once he's gone. One day Wink is struck down by a mysterious illness, and nature goes mad: glaciers melt, the water rises, and an army of prehistoric creatures appears.
