About the title
The hot-tempered 11-year-old girl Karin is left by her father, against her will, at the home of her grandfather, a Buddhist monk. The elderly man's modest dwelling is located on the edge of a small town in rural Japan, and the child doesn't like the place at all. Karin is having a hard time coping with this change in her life. She misses her father and has no desire to build a relationship with her grandfather. Trying to somehow help his granddaughter adjust to her new surroundings, the grandfather asks his cheerful and kind, though somewhat capricious, ghost cat named Anzu to keep an eye on her. And although the first meeting of these two very different beings sparks irritation and rejection, step by step a strong friendship forms between Karin and the ghost cat.
