About the series
In 1996, on the eve of Russia's adoption of a moratorium on the death penalty, a new warden, Konstantin, starts work at a special-regime prison. Like his colleagues — the prison doctor, the prosecutor, the other wardens — he is a deeply traumatized and unhappy man, set against the dangerous and frightening backdrop of the mid-1990s. After meeting the father of one of the victims, Konstantin comes to believe that it is the victims' relatives who have the right to carry out the sentence. Enlisting the support of his colleagues, Kostya comes up with a new business — outsourcing executions. But it soon becomes clear that money and justice are incompatible. As soon as there's a chance to earn, there are people ready to abandon any principle.
