About the series
1943. Beria orders his deputy Vsevolod Pavlovich Zamyatin to assemble a team of scientists to design the first Soviet atomic bomb. Doing so in the midst of the war and in a very short time is an almost impossible task. Under Kurchatov's leadership, the secret Laboratory No. 2 begins work in Moscow, staffed by the best minds from across the Union. Kurchatov persuades Zamyatin to include two scientists in the project: the bold and self-assured Frolov, who had previously discovered spontaneous nuclear fission, and radiochemist Karpova, who is in exile in Kazakhstan. Although Frolov and Karpova raise concerns at the People's Commissariat of Internal Affairs, it is decided to grant Kurchatov's request.
