About the title
Humanity sends settlers to Mars aboard several spaceships. The passengers are spoiled by consumption, since the ships have everything a modern person needs — giant shopping malls. But after one of the ships, called Aniara, veers off course and loses control, the people aboard must face unforeseen consequences. An adaptation of the philosophical poem "Aniara: A Review of Man in Time and Space" by the classic of Scandinavian literature and Nobel laureate Harry Martinson. The book was published in 1956, when the intellectual class had not yet recovered from the horrors of World War II but already feared a new catastrophe (many expected Russia and America to bombard the planet with nuclear weapons). The themes touched on in the book/film are as old as the world but never go out of date. It is a story about man's fear and helplessness in the face of a global catastrophe and an attempt to find meaning in life.
