About the title
New York, 1933. World War I veteran Burt Berendsen runs a small clinic and helps other unfortunates maimed by the war, just as he was. One day, he and his best friend and fellow veteran, lawyer Harold Woodman, are hired by the daughter of their former general to perform an autopsy on her suddenly deceased father, who had just returned from Europe and was about to give a speech at a reunion of his old regiment. Getting drawn into this case, Burt and Harold have no idea how far it will take them — and that they will meet their kindred spirit Valerie again, a nurse from a French hospital with whom they spent an unforgettable time in Amsterdam at the end of the war.
