About the title
The plot is based on a real special operation conducted by the FBI in the late 1970s–early 1980s, codenamed Abscam. It was originally aimed at investigating the trade of stolen goods. The FBI planned to plant its agents in the criminal underworld, posing as intermediaries buying stolen masterpieces for wealthy Middle Eastern collectors. The operation subsequently turned into an exposure of corruption at various levels.
